HG明朝は、リョービの「本明朝」を字母とする明朝体です。現代的なイメージにするため、仮名文字の一部は変更されています。クラシックでシャープな書体ですが、ふところは大きく、読みやすい書体です。縦、横線の始筆部のふくらみをカットすることで、初期のPCディスプレイでの表示品位向上を実現しています。また、線幅補正ヒンティングのため、線幅の種類を抑制しています。HG明朝Lは、MS明朝と同じデザインです。
