This suite of over 100 decorative characters is attributed to Robert Granjon from the late 1500s. The designs were redrawn by the Lanston drawing office in the 1920s and made famous by the work of Bruce Rogers, who found endless ways to make fresh compositions with just a few basic characters. Historically these particular ornaments have often been referred to as Arabesque Ornaments. These ornaments were digitized by Gerald Giampa in the late 1980s. Mr. Giampa's extensive use of hand set metal ornaments for decorative typography helped to make a smooth transition to digital format. The original metal ornaments were cast in the sizes of 24, 18 & 14 points and are best suited in this size range.

The P22 release features the ornaments in different key positions from the previous releases of this font.

See enclosed PDF for key position chart and usage ideas.

USING THE FONT:

The leading should be set to the same point size and the font point size (ie, 24pt font should have 24 point leading, default leading is usually a bit larger than the font's point size). The key chart shows key access positions but users of Adobe's InDesign will find the Glyph palette a helpful tool for quickly inserting ornaments as needed.
