Originally began as F.E.&E. [for Fun Euro and Experimentation], this font was not meant for public use, or even to be completed. In 1986, SWMCA was a sign painting business with it’s well known typographic catalogs.
We needed a version of Eurostile, but with each try, it was way too cartoonish. Flash forward to late 2007, SWMCA learned of a organization that advocated to protect the rights of fontographers and others in the typographic community. This organization was Typeright, and they frowned on ‘copy cat’ or clone fonts. While it was cartoonish indeed, Fun Euro still looked too much like Eurostile for SWMCA to take chances.
That brings us to 2008, the year this font was one of 2 created to address the Fun Euro design concerns. There was F.E.&E. No.1 and 2 (which this one was). This was a prototype font never meant for release or use outside of the company. There was actual experimentation using Eurostile and it’s predecessor Microgamma. This font (or the 61 characters it had) was the result.In 2009 we came up with “new” and radically different Fun Euro which got the Fun Euro name.
Fonts using the original 1986 design were renamed Fun Euro Original, so they could easily be ‘pulled’ should the need arise. This font then known as F.E.& E no2 along with it’s sister font was abandoned by the company (then unincorporated) shortly thereafter. Hiding of fonts (especially prototype ones like this one,) was and still is a common practice in some segments of the graphics industry. It would remain hidden away until 2015 In 2012, SWMCA decided to finally offer it’s fonts to the public. In 2013, Fun Euro Schoolhouse was released. In it’s description was included “based on Eurostile”. The problem? It used the radically different 2009 design.
We should have issued a Fun Euro font to the public USING THE ORIGINAL 1986 DESIGN TEMPLATE FIRST. It was a PR nightmare, and almost put us out of business. This event, known within our company as the ‘Fun Euro Fiasco’ caused a number of changes, including the first public exposure of this font. It prompted us to retire the Fun Euro name in 2016, exactly 30 years from the creation of the first Fun Euro font.
We ended up overhauling the entire company including dropping the word catalogs from our name. This also included revamping our operating agreement [by laws] some. In 2017, the retirement of the Fun Euro name became official with a provision added to our operating agreement that prohibits the company from ever offering products and services under the Fun Euro name again. “Fun Euro” may now only be used by the company for historic or descriptive purposes only.
The Fun Euro typeface was renamed Russelfeiring Blast, named after the Norwegian college holiday with the excepting of the Schoolhouse font being renamed Name Day Cheers, after the children’s holiday celebrated worldwide [but not so much here in the United States].
With that along with this font being ‘exposed’ we decided to just finish it out in early 2018. The original 61 characters were used from 2008, the rest of the characters were added in 2018. Naturally, this font would be renamed Utopian [another word used to describe European although not it’s technical meaning] Mirthful [which means merry or fun], and of course Venture [to represent experimentation].
