The original Xheighter™ font was in part based on one which was originally designed for phototypesetting systems. The characters used for reference were taken from a few letters in the headline in an old newspaper clipping, so more than 200 of the fonts 234 characters have been created from scratch, and it has been tightly kerned to work in all sorts of headlines with little or no fine-tuning required.
ON USING XHEIGHTER™...
This font is intended for use as display type. For that reason, it has been spaced and kerned more tightly than type intended for smaller point sizes. If you use it in an application which does not support kerning, certain letter combinations may look unpleasantly loose. If you use it in applications which offer you the choice of turning the kerning on or off, be sure that the kerning is turned on. In Adobe Illustrator, for example, be sure that you DO check the box which says "auto kerning", when you use these fonts. With "auto kerning" unselected, Illustrator ignores the kerning pairs built into a font.
When using Xheighter™ at smaller point sizes, we suggest that you increase the tracking of the font and use be sure to use Xheighter™ Light, because it has larger counters (inner spaces) which will help to improve legibility.
THE "ORIGINAL" VERSIONS
For the TypeArt™ customers who licensed the 1995 release of the Xheighter™ family, the "a" character would have appeared as it now appears in the 2 additional members of this family labelled "Original". Those original fonts had an alternate "a" character built into a special character slot of the font. The designer recently decided that the alternate "a" would better represent the main "a" character in the fonts, so the new versions of the fonts (i.e. the ones which are NOT labelled "original") utilize that more traditional "a" character.
If you used the original release of the Xheighter™ family, and you were using that special character to achieve the traditional "a" in a previous version, simply update your files using the "Original" fonts, and you will find that the "a" is still achieved with that special character.
PC FONT NAMES
Because of naming limitations for PC fonts, the PC versions come in the two families "Xheighter" and "Xheighter Original" and the font names were changed as followed:
Xheighter-Light = Xheighter-Regular
Xheighter-LightOblique = Xheighter-Oblique
Xheighter-Black = Xheighter-Bold
Xheighter-BlackOblique = Xheighter-BoldOblique
Xheighter Original-Light = Xheighter Original-Regular
Xheighter Original-Black = Xheighter Original-Bold
PRONOUNCING XHEIGHTER™...
How the hell do you pronounce "Xheighter"? It sounds like the name of a German type designer, huh? Actually it is pronounced "excite her" or "x-height-er". The reason this name was chosen is actually on account of its unusually high x-height of this font. The lowercase letters are almost the same height as the uppercase letters, so we thought that Xheigher™ would be an interesting name for the font... especially because there are so many neat puns you can make with the name:
